What is LTD Insurance?

If you are unable to work due to long-term disability, the Fund's LTD policy provides ongoing income replacement to help you maintain financial stability during recovery.

Coverage Details

Benefit Amount

  • Monthly Benefit: 60% of your basic monthly earnings
  • Maximum: Up to $3,500 per month
  • Minimum: $100 per month

Waiting Period

  • Elimination Period: 365 days
  • Benefits begin after one full year of continuous disability

How LTD Complements Wage Continuation

Long-Term Disability coverage begins after the 365-day waiting period, which typically follows the wage continuation period. This provides continuous income protection during extended disability.

Coverage Duration by Age

The length of time you receive LTD benefits depends on your age when you become disabled:

Younger Employees

If you become disabled at age 61 or younger, benefits continue until you reach age 65 or Social Security Normal Retirement Age, providing maximum protection.

Understanding SSNRA

Social Security Normal Retirement Age varies by birth year. This ensures you maintain coverage until you're eligible for full Social Security benefits.

Exclusions & Limitations

What is not covered under LTD insurance

General Exclusions

The following are not covered:

  • Disabilities caused by war
  • Self-inflicted injuries
  • Preexisting conditions (within 90 days before coverage starts)

Exception for Preexisting Conditions: Preexisting condition exclusions do not apply if you have been insured continuously for 12 months.

Limited Conditions (24-Month Maximum)

Disabilities due to the following conditions are covered up to 24 months lifetime, unless you are hospitalized:

  • Mental disorders
  • Substance abuse
  • Other specified limited conditions**

Hospitalization Exception

If you are hospitalized for treatment of these conditions, the 24-month limitation may not apply. Contact the Fund office for specific details.

Continued Prescription Coverage

LTD recipients remain eligible for the prescription benefit through the PFT Health and Welfare Fund.
